Data · London Commute Cost Index 2026

What does commuting in London cost?

An honest, sourced comparison of the real monthly and yearly cost of getting to work in London — by electric moped, cargo e-bike, Tube and car.

How much does it cost to commute in London in 2026?

In 2026, the realistic ways to commute across London range from about £125 a month to over £300 a month. A Moon Fleets electric cargo-bike subscription is the cheapest motor option at £125/month all-inclusive and needs no licence; an electric moped subscription is £179/month all-inclusive. A Zone 1–3 Tube travelcard costs £201.60/month (2026 TfL pricing), and running a small petrol car costs roughly £317/month before ULEZ and congestion charges (RAC 2026).

Over a year that is about £1,500 for the cargo e-bike, £2,148 for the moped, £2,419 for the Tube (at the monthly rate) and about £3,800 for a small car. The moped and e-bike prices already include third-party insurance, servicing, GPS and an anti-theft lock, and both are fully electric — so no £12.50/day ULEZ charge, no £15/day Congestion Charge and no road tax. The only extras are home charging (about £2 a week) and, for the mopeds only, a one-off CBT (around £130, valid two years).

Frequently asked

What is the cheapest way to commute in London in 2026?
For a motor vehicle that takes you door-to-door, a no-licence electric cargo-bike subscription is the cheapest at about £125 a month all-inclusive. An electric moped subscription is £179 a month all-inclusive. Both undercut a Zone 1–3 Tube travelcard at £201.60 a month (2026 TfL pricing) and are far cheaper than running a small car, which the RAC puts at roughly £317 a month.
How much does commuting in London cost per year?
At 2026 prices, a Moon Fleets cargo e-bike is about £1,500 a year and an electric moped about £2,148 a year, both all-inclusive. A Zone 1–3 Tube travelcard works out to roughly £2,419 a year at the monthly rate (an annual travelcard is somewhat cheaper). Running a small car is about £3,800 a year before ULEZ and congestion charges.
Is an electric moped cheaper than a car or the Tube in London?
Yes on both counts for most commuters. An electric moped subscription at £179/month all-inclusive is below the £201.60 Zone 1–3 travelcard and well below a car. It also avoids the £12.50/day ULEZ charge and the £15/day Congestion Charge that a non-compliant car pays inside the zone, and there is no road tax.
What hidden costs should I add to an electric moped?
Two small ones. Home charging is roughly £2 a week (about £100 a year). A CBT — required only for the mopeds, not the cargo e-bikes — is a one-day course costing around £130 and valid for two years, so it amortises to a few pounds a month. Insurance, servicing, GPS and the lock are already in the subscription.
