How to look after your electric moped battery (and make it last)

Simple habits that protect your battery, maximise range and keep it healthy for years.

How do you look after an electric moped battery?

The basics are simple: charge regularly rather than running the battery flat, keep it somewhere cool and dry, charge at room temperature, and don’t leave it sitting at 0% for long periods. Modern removable lithium-ion batteries like those on Moon Fleets mopeds are designed for daily charging, so topping up after each commute is good for them, not bad.

Day to day you don’t need to overthink it — on a Moon Fleets subscription, battery health is covered by the included servicing, and if a battery ever underperforms we sort it. These habits simply help you get the best range and longest life in between.

Which charging habits extend the range?

Lithium-ion batteries prefer little-and-often over deep discharges. Charging after each ride — or whenever convenient — keeps the battery in its happy range and means you always set off full. There’s no need to run it to empty first; that actually adds wear.

Charge at normal room temperature where you can, from the supplied charger and a standard 3-pin socket. Because the batteries are removable, most riders simply take them inside to charge.

How do cold weather and storage affect range?

Cold reduces range temporarily — a battery will give you fewer miles on a freezing morning, then return to normal as it warms. Storing and charging the battery indoors (cool but not cold) keeps performance steady through winter.

If you’re not riding for a while, leave the battery part-charged rather than empty or 100% full, somewhere cool and dry. Avoid leaving it in direct sun or a hot vehicle. Follow these and a healthy battery holds its range for years.

Frequently asked

Should I let the battery fully discharge before charging?
No — lithium-ion batteries prefer regular top-ups over deep discharges. Charging after each ride is good for the battery and keeps you ready to go.
Does cold weather affect range?
Yes, temporarily — you’ll get fewer miles on very cold mornings, returning to normal as the battery warms. Charging and storing it indoors helps.
What if my battery loses range?
On a Moon Fleets subscription, battery health is covered by the included servicing — if a battery underperforms, we replace or service it. Just get in touch.
