How much does an electric moped cost to run in London?

Charging, insurance, servicing, CBT and ULEZ — the real monthly cost of an electric moped in London.

How much does an electric moped cost to run in London?

On a Moon Fleets subscription the running cost is simple: from £125–£179 per month all-inclusive, plus about £2 a week to charge at home. The monthly price already covers third-party insurance, servicing, GPS tracking and an anti-theft lock, and there is no ULEZ charge and no road tax because the vehicle is fully electric.

If you owned a moped instead, you’d pay charging plus separate insurance, servicing, repairs and depreciation. For comparison, a Zone 1–3 Tube travelcard is £201.60 a month (2026 TfL pricing) — so an all-inclusive electric moped is competitive with, and often cheaper than, public transport.

Is charging the only ongoing cost?

Electric mopeds charge from a normal 3-pin socket. A full charge costs roughly 30–60p of electricity, and most commuters spend around £2 a week — a fraction of what a petrol moped costs in fuel, and far less than a car.

Because the batteries are removable, you charge at home, in a hallway or wherever you park — no dedicated charger or wall-box needed.

What’s bundled into a Moon Fleets subscription?

On a subscription, insurance, servicing, GPS tracking and an anti-theft lock are part of the monthly price rather than separate bills. Servicing is scheduled (every 2,500 miles), and theft is handled in-house via GPS — so there are no surprise costs.

Owning a moped means budgeting separately for each of those, plus the upfront purchase and the depreciation when you sell. That’s the trade-off a subscription removes.

What one-off cost is there (the CBT)?

For a moped you’ll need a CBT — a one-day course around £130, valid two years. Spread over 24 months that’s a few pounds a month. If you choose a no-licence cargo e-bike, there’s no CBT at all.

Add it up and an all-inclusive electric moped subscription from £125–£179/month, plus ~£2/week charging, sits below the £201.60 cost of a Zone 1–3 travelcard — for a vehicle that takes you door-to-door.
