Moped parking in London: the borough rules explained
Which boroughs are free, which charge, and the discounts electric riders get.
How much does it cost to park a moped in London?
In most of London — around 28 of the 33 boroughs — dedicated motorcycle and moped bays are free to use. Five central and north London boroughs charge non-residents to park: Westminster, Camden, Islington, Hackney and Lewisham, typically around £1 a day via the RingGo app. The City of London has its own arrangements too.
Good news for electric riders: several charging boroughs give electric motorbikes a discount — Islington offers 50% off, and Camden’s resident permit is cheaper for electric than petrol. Our West London base (Hammersmith & Fulham) is one of the free boroughs. Always check the signs at the bay and use a parking app to find legal spaces.
Where is moped parking free in London?
Solo motorcycle bays (marked “Motorcycles only” / “Solo M/C”) are free to use in roughly 28 of London’s 33 boroughs. You park in a designated bay, not on the pavement and not in a car bay, and you’re fine. This covers most of outer and much of inner London, including our home borough of Hammersmith & Fulham.
A motorcycle-parking app (such as RingGo, or a bay-finder map) shows nearby legal bays and whether they’re free or paid, so you’re never circling the block.
Which London boroughs charge for moped parking?
Westminster, Camden, Islington, Hackney and Lewisham charge non-residents to use motorcycle bays — usually around £1 a day, paid via RingGo. These cover the busiest central and north London areas (the West End, Camden, Angel, Shoreditch’s Hackney side). It’s a small daily cost, far below car parking.
Electric riders often pay less: Islington gives electric motorbikes a 50% discount, and Camden’s permit is cheaper for electric than petrol. Always check the current rate on the signage, as boroughs update their schemes.
How do you avoid a parking ticket?
Use designated motorcycle bays only; don’t park on the pavement, on double yellows or in car bays. Where a bay is paid, pay the session in the app before you leave it. Lock the moped and use the GPS tracking that comes with every Moon Fleets subscription.
When in doubt, search “[borough] motorcycle parking” for the council’s current rules — they’re the definitive source.
