ULEZ and electric mopeds: what London riders need to know
Electric mopeds are ULEZ-exempt 24/7 — here’s exactly how ULEZ, the Congestion Charge and road tax work for them.
Are electric mopeds exempt from ULEZ in London?
Yes. Fully electric mopeds and cargo bikes produce zero emissions, so they are exempt from London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) charge across Greater London, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They also pay £0 road tax (Vehicle Excise Duty).
Every Moon Fleets vehicle is fully electric, so you never pay a ULEZ charge. Motorcycles and mopeds — petrol or electric — are also exempt from the Congestion Charge, so an electric moped is one of the cheapest ways to move around central London.
Do electric mopeds pay the ULEZ charge?
ULEZ charges older, more polluting vehicles a daily fee to drive within Greater London. Fully electric vehicles meet the standard automatically and pay nothing — there’s no daily charge and nothing to register for an electric moped.
That’s a real saving versus an older petrol moped or a non-compliant car, every single day you ride.
Do you pay the Congestion Charge or road tax?
The Congestion Charge applies to cars and some vehicles in central London on weekdays, but motorcycles and mopeds are exempt — electric or not. So an electric moped skips both ULEZ and the Congestion Charge.
On road tax, fully electric mopeds currently pay £0 Vehicle Excise Duty. Combined, that’s no ULEZ, no Congestion Charge and no road tax — three costs a car driver can’t avoid.
